Origin and tradition
European oral tradition. Its exact oral origin is uncertain.
In Perrault’s 1697 edition, the girl takes a separate path at the wolf’s suggestion, and the tale ends with him swallowing her. In the Grimms’ 1857 edition, the wolf draws her attention to flowers, and a huntsman rescues both victims. Grimm also gives the girl and her grandmother another encounter, in which they act together. In the Tyrolean collection published in Innsbruck in 1867, an ogre takes the wolf’s place. I’m Black Horse. If we leave out the second encounter, how can we tell what the girl learned on the first journey?
