Origin and tradition

A family of tales circulating in Europe. Its exact oral origin is uncertain.

In Basile, Talia wakes when a flax splinter comes out of her finger. In Perrault, the prince reaches the sleeping woman as the hundred years expire, and a new danger at court follows the awakening. In the Grimms’ 1812 telling, the sleep and the hedge give way near the end, followed by a wedding. One question separates the three texts: does waking up end the story?
