Origin and tradition

An Indian Sanskrit epic tradition with Thai (Ramakien) and Khmer (Reamker) adaptations. The dates belong to individual manuscripts.

On the Udaipur leaves dated to about 1655, Sanskrit lines from the Sundara Kanda appear on the backs of the illustrations. The Thai Ramakien entry preserves an incomplete copy written in light lettering on black paper. Cambodia’s Reamker manuscript covers the story from Sita’s abduction to Hanuman’s oath of loyalty. Read together, the entries show three manuscript traditions. The Atlas dates reflect the catalogue evidence for each surviving object.
