Origin and tradition

Chicago, United States

In Baum’s 1900 book, Dorothy puts on the silver shoes because they look suitable for walking. Only much later does she learn they can carry her home. The 1939 MGM film gives that role to ruby slippers. The colour changes while the shoes keep their role in the homecoming.
