How does it work in the tale?

Baum gives Dorothy silver shoes. The 1939 film turns them ruby red. Cinderella’s slipper reveals who she is, while Dorothy’s shoes carry her from one place to another.

When does Dorothy learn what the shoes can do?

In Baum’s novel, Dorothy wears the silver shoes throughout her journey. Only at the end does Glinda explain that she can return home by knocking her heels together three times and naming her destination. The shoes were there all along, so the ending turns on new knowledge about a familiar object.
