How does it work in the tale?

What choices can you see in a retelling?

Ellen C. Babbitt gives the monkey and the crocodile two encounters. First the monkey claims to have left his heart in the tree. Later he recognises the crocodile hiding on a rock by its voice. A shortened version that drops the second encounter also loses the moment when the monkey spots danger on his own. Comparing the text with its source makes that choice visible.
