Origin and tradition

Japan · storytelling tradition

The tiny girl discovered by a bamboo cutter grows up and asks her suitors to find nearly impossible objects. The last journey is about a different kind of loss. The Moon is Kaguya’s home and the place to which her adoptive family must let her go. The 1903 record dates Ozaki’s retelling of the older Taketori Monogatari.
