Origin and tradition

Berlin, present-day Germany

In 1812, the children leave the witch’s house and find their way home. In 1857, a wide stretch of water stands in their way and a duck ferries them across. Gretel decides that the two of them would be too heavy for the duck and asks to cross separately. The added scene gives her another problem to solve between escape and homecoming.
