Hansel and Gretel
In short: Two siblings who lose their way in the forest and escape the witch’s house together.
Character
How does it work in the tale?
Hansel follows white pebbles home on the first journey. On the second, birds eat his breadcrumbs. Gretel finds a way out of the witch’s house. Each sibling takes the lead at a different stage.
Where do the siblings’ roles change?
In the Grimms’ 1857 text, Hansel gets them home the first time with white stones. Once he is locked up at the witch’s house, Gretel finds a way out. She also calls to the duck that helps them across the water on the way home. Follow who spots the solution at each obstacle.
