Origin and tradition

The earliest documented storyteller was Ḥannā Diyāb of Aleppo. Galland heard the tale in Paris. Its earlier origin is uncertain.

In Payne’s translation, the ring and lamp summon separate helpers. The ring comes into play while Aladdin is trying to escape from underground. After he returns, the lamp starts a new encounter in his mother’s hands. Giving the objects separate scenes distinguishes the escape from the changes that begin at home.
