Counts reflect the Atlas catalogue. A link may represent a recording, a publication or an association with a local tradition.
The Syria page is linked to Aladdin through Hanna Diyab, a storyteller from Aleppo. Galland recorded in his diary that he heard the tale of the lamp from him in Paris in 1709. The Atlas distinguishes the teller’s home from the place where the documented telling happened. The tale’s earlier travels remain uncertain.
