Maruša and the Twelve Months
Maruša did all the work in the house. Her stepmother and stepsister Holena treated her harshly. In the middle of January, Holena demanded violets from the woods. When Maruša said there would be no flowers under the snow, her stepmother sent her outside.
At the top of the mountain, Maruša found a fire. The twelve months sat on twelve stones around it. She asked permission to warm her hands. January handed his staff to March, who waved it over the fire. The snow melted and violets bloomed.
