January sits on a high stone in the forest. When Maruša explains why she has come, January gives his place to March, and violets emerge from beneath the snow. June takes over when she needs strawberries. Each time she returns home, the scent she brings indoors contrasts with the winter still outside. The date marks Baudiš’s English collection, whose preface credits Němcová’s retelling from Slovak.
