The Cook Islands telling that Westervelt reproduces from Turner in 1910 begins with three brothers fishing from Rarotonga. All three are named Māui. One asks for land to catch on his hook, and Manahiki rises from the sea. The three brothers give readers a point of comparison with tellings that follow one Māui.
