Origin and tradition

Western Niger · Zarma storytelling region

Nicole Tersis includes Sourou among the Zarma tales of western Niger. In Djibo Moumouni Djermakoye’s 2005 short story Mon ami Doudou, a grandfather tells it to his grandchildren. In that telling, the adviser Mounafiki resents Sourou’s place beside the king. The tests come from the court, while the means of passing them come from Sourou’s friendship with animals.
