Two kinds of books offer a way into western Niger’s Zarma storytelling. Sourou the Patient appears in Nicole Tersis’s collection and is later told by a grandfather in a Nigerien short story. In Bana, published in Niamey, a fish’s request changes a decision the heroine makes at the river.
