Origin and tradition
Ancient Egypt · setting of the tale
In Strabo’s Geography, the eagle takes the sandal from a servant while Rhodopis is bathing. The king is struck by the sandal’s shape and the way it arrived. The search leads to Rhodopis in Naucratis. The point of comparison with Cinderella is the shoe as a clue to its owner. Strabo presents the story as a tale people tell in his discussion of the pyramids.
