Origin and tradition

Malinké and Mandinka tellings are recorded in Guinea and The Gambia respectively. The years 1906 and 1976 date the editions.

In A. K. Rahman’s telling, published by David P. Gamble, a child carries a crocodile to the water. When the crocodile wants to eat the child, Hare is asked to judge. He takes them back to where they met and asks them to show him how the child first found the crocodile. I’m Black Horse. Why do you think Hare wanted to see what happened as well as hear about it?
