Origin and tradition

A Latvian literary epic drawing on folk tradition.

Pumpurs drew on Latvian folklore to reshape the hero in a long poem. The 1930 film placed the epic struggle alongside the story of Latvian independence. The two works show which events a familiar hero could carry in different periods.
