Origin and tradition

Berlin, present-day Germany

The donkey sets out for Bremen and gathers a dog, cat and rooster along the way. When they pile up by the window and make noise, the people inside cannot make sense of what they see. The robber who returns in the dark mistakes each animal for a different danger. The group ends up living in the house it found together, short of its original destination.
