Origin and tradition

Czechia · storytelling tradition

John, a blacksmith’s son, takes the boots, cloak and cap of invisibility from three brothers quarrelling over their inheritance. The ring in the title appears later as a gift from the princess. Turning it takes John a great distance in an instant. When he forgets her warning and thinks of her, the ring slips from his finger and disappears. The Moravian tale in Baudiš’s 1917 collection gives the objects different powers and shows the rules that govern them.
