In the foreword to the Mpongwe section of his 1912 book, Robert Hamill Nassau explains that he rendered sixteen tales he heard in Mpongwe in Libreville into English. Do Not Trust Your Friend opens that section. The character list gives the Mpongwe names of Leopard and Wild Rat alongside their English equivalents.
