Character

How does it work in the tale?

After listening to the merchant Tamrin, Makeda wants to see Solomon’s wisdom for herself. The journey begins with her own decision, which also sets up the epic’s account of a dynasty through her son Menelik.

How does Makeda explain the journey to her people?

In chapter 24 of the Kəbrä Nägäśt, Makeda weighs wisdom against gold and silver. She explains that a ruler needs wisdom even to keep what she already has. Those around her promise to accompany her, and preparations for the caravan follow. The queen’s speech gives the journey its purpose before the camels set out.
