Origin and tradition
Ukraine
In Bain’s 1916 edition, the cat chases the fox and brings the cock home after the first two calls. On the third call, the cat cannot catch up. It goes home for a fiddle and plays outside the fox’s den. The refrain recalls the earlier rescues, and this time the cat has a plan that depends on sound as well.
