Origin and tradition
South Georgia · crossing area
Shackleton recounts crossing the mountains and glaciers of South Georgia with Frank Worsley and Tom Crean in 1916. During the roughly thirty-six-hour journey, he writes, he often felt as though a fourth person was with them. The detail appears as a personal experience in his 1919 expedition book. The South Georgia Museum also presents it as part of how the expedition has been remembered.
