Origin and tradition
Finland · Kalevala tradition
In the tenth poem of the Kalevala, Louhi asks Ilmarinen to make the Sampo. He builds a forge. The finished object is described with mills for flour, salt and money. The poem then divides its output among food, goods to sell and supplies to keep at home. These details give readers clues to how the object works when imagining its form. The Atlas links to the tenth poem in the 1849 Finnish text.
