Origin and tradition

Malé, Maldives

Ibn Battuta included a story he heard from islanders in his travel account. In the telling, the being returns to the water when it hears the Qur’an recited on shore. Xavier Romero-Frias’s 2012 collection presents the story under its local name, Ranna Māri. The two records show how a travel account and a modern folklore collection present the same legend.
