Origin and tradition

Petra, Jordan

Burckhardt’s travel book, published in 1822, records an account that calls Petra’s rock-cut façade Pharaoh’s Castle and makes it the home of a prince. The legend in the Met’s 2019 exhibition catalogue draws the eye upwards. It tells of a pharaoh hiding his gold in the stone urn at the top. Two accounts point to the same monument and bring different details into view.
