Origin and tradition
Brazil · storytelling tradition
In Elsie Spicer Eells’s 1917 edition, the Sea Serpent’s daughter grows weary of endless daylight. Her father sends a bag of night from under the sea. The carriers hear its creatures before they open it, so night arrives first as sound. Later the Sea Serpent’s daughter asks the birds to announce the coming day.
