Origin and tradition

Ireland · storytelling tradition

In Jacobs’s 1895 text, Morraha asks for sheep, cattle and a castle over the first three days. On the fourth, his wife tells him to stop playing. He goes anyway, and the winner demands a sword of light and news of a death. As he sets out, whose advice he follows starts to matter. His wife tells him to take the bridle at the window and wait for his mount to speak first.
