Origin and tradition

Copenhagen, Denmark

The mermaid gives up her voice to enter the human world. She cannot tell the prince in her own voice that she saved him. In the final scene, she rises from the foam and joins the daughters of the air. They show her a path to the immortal soul she sought, through deeds of her own.
