Origin and tradition

Mauritania · Wolof telling, approximate location

In Mamadou Sall’s Mauritanian telling, the ant moves sand grain by grain to reach a loved one on the other side of a dune. The king’s curiosity gives the ant a chance to explain the work. The story draws its energy from the difference between the ant’s size and the task it has taken on. Sall’s recordings let listeners hear the scene in Wolof and French.
