Origin and tradition
The snowdrop telling comes from a Moldovan source. The 2017 record concerns the jointly inscribed spring custom, which also involves North Macedonia.
Spring sees a snowdrop in the snow. Trying to shelter the flower, she pricks her hand on a thorn and a drop of blood falls onto the snow. It melts and the flower revives. The martinka in North Macedonia is an example of the red-and-white thread custom worn at the same seasonal transition. I’m Black Horse. Which two colours would you pick to tell someone spring is coming?
