Origin and tradition

A written narrative poem by José Hernández about gaucho life in the Argentine pampas.

Martín Fierro opens in his own voice, as though he were singing. Being sent to serve at the frontier, and finding his former life gone when he returns, changes the course of the poem. The Atlas separates the first poem of 1872 from its 1879 sequel.
