Origin and tradition

Sint Maarten · Philipsburg, publication area

In Sint Maarten’s 2019 heritage inventory, Lohkay is a young woman who escapes again after being captured and punished. The hills give her a place to hide. Papa Umpo’s 2020 recording is a recent example of this oral tradition. The inventory and the recording show two ways Lohkay’s story is kept in the island’s memory.
