Origin and tradition

Marshallese oral tradition. The date marks the 1998 second edition, which describes both birth variants.

In one telling the brothers emerge from a boil on Wullep’s leg. In another they leap from his forehead. Lijebake, the great mother turtle, gives them magical powers. They travel the Ralik and Ratak chains, sometimes causing trouble and sometimes helping. I’m Black Horse. The beginning changes, but the brothers still set out together. How can you tell when mischief has turned into help?
