Origin and tradition

Vatican · Room of Heliodorus fresco

The Vatican Museums place the meeting of 452 near Mantua. In the fresco, the Colosseum, an aqueduct and an obelisk evoke Rome. The saints in the sky belong to the legend that grew around the encounter. The landmarks and the figures overhead show how the painter restaged the historical meeting.
