Origin and tradition

English folktale. A related telling was recorded in Jamaica.

Tabart’s London printing of 1807 makes the beanstalk a path into the giant’s country. In the Jamaican telling published by Martha Warren Beckwith in 1924, the hero is called Jand. These dated records let readers follow the idea of climbing a bean stalk in two different storytelling settings.
