Origin and tradition

Jack tales from Andros Island in the Bahamas.

The Tiger abducts the princess. When Jack imitates the Tiger’s song, the princess answers from the pit where she is held. In the Santal telling published in 1909, the woman herself sings when she returns home. The 1935 performance by Alexander Finderson and his group lets you hear the shift from speech to singing.
