Origin and tradition

Atlantic Canada · Wabanaki tradition

In MacMillan’s telling, the trees first protect the children. Then Glooskap asks the children to protect the birds. Leaf colours carry over into the feathers, and the sounds of air and water into birdsong. The birds leave in autumn and return to the trees in spring. This page follows the bird story printed in 1922. The Kluskap glossary entry also links to a different story told at the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre.
