Origin and tradition

Fua Mulaku, Maldives

Xavier Romero-Frias credits the telling to Vaijehēge Alī Dīdī of Fua Mulaku. In the story, the first palms sprout from graves. Islanders learn to use the tree for food and timber for their boats. The collection ends the story by inviting readers to look again at the fruit. The soft mark is the mouth where the shoot emerges.
