Origin and tradition

Switzerland · storytelling tradition

Griffis’s 1920 text opens in an imagined age when flowers grew to the summits. Once the frost giants arrive, the fairies devise clothing that can withstand the cold. The queen touches the fairy with her wand and her feet turn into roots that grip the rock. A white coat accounts for the flower’s appearance, and the transformation explains how it grows on rocky ground within the story.
