Origin and tradition

Danube water-spirit legends and the Viennese stage tradition.

In this tradition, the Danube is home to a water spirit who can speak to people. Hensler and Kauer’s musical adaptation was staged in Vienna in 1798 and in Berlin in 1801. The Atlas line follows the stage work between those cities.
