Origin and tradition

Maranao storytelling tradition of Mindanao.

In Mabel Cook Cole’s 1916 collection, a sea battle ends with the sinking of Bantugan’s ship. An island rises near the mouth of the Rio Grande, and the tale makes it a new home for him and his warriors. When his wife’s ship sinks, Mount Timaco rises. Two losses at sea give the coast two places to remember.
