The Ape, the Snake, and the Lion in George W. Bateman’s 1901 Zanzibar Tales opens with Mvoo Laana learning to set traps. The young hunter’s four encounters take place at the same trap. When the story moves from the village to the sultan’s presence, those forest encounters help explain an accusation.
