The Nineveh entry for Iraq is based on a Gilgamesh tablet recovered from the library of the Assyrian king Ashurbanipal. The seventh-century BCE date belongs to this surviving clay copy. The tablet shows that the Babylonian epic’s flood episode was also preserved in a library in the Assyrian capital.
