In the Kabyle tale on the Algeria page, H’ab Sliman strikes the rose tree that has spread over the village and hears his sister’s voice. In Basset’s record, her tears bring rain and her laughter brings sunshine. The tree the villagers have been trying to cut down becomes the place where H’ab Sliman recognises her.
