Character

How does it work in the tale?

To Reynard, an accusation is often an opportunity to tell another story. The other animals have to decide whose interests the account serves.

Who controls the story at court?

In Caxton’s Reynard, the animals come before the king to accuse the fox. Reynard gets to speak and tries to turn the hearing towards an account of his own. After reading an accusation, look for the detail he brings to the foreground in reply. Power at court can shift according to whose story is heard.
