Latte stone

In short: A stone support made up of a shaft and capstone, used in traditional CHamoru buildings in the Mariana Islands.

Object

How does it work in the tale?

In Tinian’s Tåga legend, the capstone becomes a place to keep a family memory. Knowing the shape of the support helps explain why the story points to the top of a stone.

Why do the stones stand in two rows?

In latte sets in the Mariana Islands, shafts called haligi carry capstones called tåsa. Two facing rows form a base for the structure above. The Tåga legend from Tinian draws attention to a single capstone. Looking at the arrangement lets us picture where that stone belongs in a larger building.
