Kema
In short: A woman in Eritrean Tigre sky lore associated with the Pleiades star cluster.
Character
How does it work in the tale?
In The Great Star, Kema is the red star’s mother-in-law. In the goat story, she is a mother whose son recovers their stolen herd. The same group of stars recalls a family custom in one tale and the herd’s place in the sky in the other.
How can we recognise Kema in the sky?
Littmann identifies Kema as the Pleiades, her son as Aldebaran and the goats between them as the Hyades. Those names help locate the scene on a star map. I’m Black Horse. If you named a group of stars after someone in your family, which stars would you choose?
